The Cleveland Guardians are headed to the postseason yet again in 2026, and a good portion of the team\'s success can be attributed to the emergence of two young aces - rookie Parker Messick and this guy, Gavin Williams.
Williams debuted in the summer of 2023 and acquitted himself very well in 16 starts (3.29 ERA). But his 2024 was marred by an elbow injury that took away half his season, and the other half was below expectations (4.86 ERA).
He made some gains in 2025, pitching over 160 innings and averaging over a strikeout per inning. But in 2026, his average fastball ticked up to over 97-mph and Williams has largely been able to contain his walks - which had been a big issue for him in prior seasons. Now, he\'s near the top of the league in Whiff %, Strikeout %, and has greatly increased his opponents\' chase rates. And perhaps most importantly, he\'s throwing a lot more first-pitch strikes, which has a very direct correlation to walk rates in the present and in the future. So in short, I think he has very much broken out for real.
