A rare antique 19th century directional compass and sundial in wooden case. For Sale

Here is a super brass framed directional compass with blued pointers marked \"N\" and \"S\" and a locking mechanism which activated when the case is closed, housed in a wooden case. The compass has a printed paper face, with each quarter marked from 0 to 90 minutes.

The sundial feature is marked into the wooden surround and time of day should be indicated by the shadow cast by a cotton thread gnomon.

There does not appear to be any maker\'s marks on this item.The piece also has a brass side arm to keep the lid open and two brass catches on the wooden sides.

The compass is in good working order and condition. There a few small marks and ink stains on the lid of the wooden casing, and the interior printed instructions have become grimy with age, but still fully legible. The gnomon cord has become detached at one end, which the buyer may wish to repair.

The outer measurementsare 3 inches (7.8 cm)in length, by 2.25 inches (5.7 cm) in width.

This would make abrilliant addition to any collection of militaria or scientific items.

We always use Signed For or Insured services (unless you chooseotherwise on smaller value items). Although these do cost a little more, theyoffer better service and protection for items, so are worth the extra cost incase of any problems.

I will combine postage for multiple items,provided they can be safely packed together.
