Description

Ancient Greek Apulian terracotta oinochoe, dating to the 4th Century BC.

The vessel has a rounded, globular body rising to a relatively narrow neck with a broad trefoil-shaped mouth. A single large, vertically oriented strap handle connects the shoulder of the vessel to the upper part of the neck.

The body is made of warm reddish-orange terracotta, with a lighter buff-beige area around the lower body and foot, creating a natural two-tone appearance. The surface retains areas of the original reddish color together with lighter areas, surface variation and an aged archaeological patina.

The interior of the neck and mouth is also terracotta-colored and shows several horizontal turning lines from the manufacture of the vessel. Similar horizontal traces are visible on parts of the exterior surface. The vessel stands on a low, circular raised foot, with a flat underside and a recessed central area. The mouth has an irregular trefoil profile, with three projecting lobes and intervening curves. The rim shows minor chips and surface wear.

Condition

Good archaeological condition for its age. The vessel is complete in overall form and structurally stable. The handle has been repaired, and a small fragment has been reattached, as visible in the photographs. There are also minor chips and losses around the rim, together with a few small surface bumps/abrasions on the body.

The surface shows natural archaeological wear, with variation in color and texture, deposits and patination, including darker areas and encrustation particularly around the lower body and other areas of the surface.
