ANTIQUE, VERY RARE 19th century Mintons China Works tile, the famous "WaverlySeries", depicting a scene from one of the novels written by Sir Walter Scott “OldMortality”, with Morton and Burley.The ceramic tile designed by John Moyr Smith in the UK (Stoke-upon-Trent),circa 1877-1878, depicts an event from the Waverly Novels written by Sir WalterScott. This illustration is one of 12 subject tiles from the series depicting scenes from Sir W. Scott’s novels (Fortunes of Nigel, Rob Roy, GuyMannering, Kenilworth, Quentin Durward, Heart of Midlothian, OldMortality, Bride of Lammermoor, Fair Maid of Perth, Ivanhoe, TheAntiquary and The Talisman).The tile, dimensions 8x8 in, and in grey, black, white, ochre/mustardcolors, is in great vintage condition. It is framed/mounted in a luxurious vintage dark woodenframe with mother of pearl accents measuring approx. 11.5 x 14 in. The weightis cca 1.8lb. The back of the tile has original molded markings "MintonChina Works Stoke on Trent”.More about the artist: John Moyr Smith (1839–1912) was a Scottish designer, architect, and illustrator known for his distinctive
contributions to the Aesthetic Movement and the decorative arts in late19th-century Britain. Trained under Alfred Waterhouse and George Gilbert Scott,Smith developed a strong architectural background before turning his attentionto decorative design. He is best known for his ceramic tile panels featuringclassical, literary, and mythological subjects, many of which were produced byleading firms such as Minton and Co.More about the Mintons: Mintons was Europe's leading ceramic factory during the Victorian era, an independent business founded in 1793 by Thomas Minton in the city of Stoke-upon-Trent, England. One of the most famous Staffordshire pottery industry leaders. The family continued to control the business until the mid-20th century (1968).
