In the late 1980s, Anderson & Sheppard was something of an outlier on Savile Row.

While many neighboring houses were experimenting with ready-to-wear lines, licensing deals, and broader commercial expansion during the 1970s and 1980s, Anderson & Sheppard largely stayed committed to traditional bespoke tailoring. They remained focused on hand-cut, individually made garments and their long-established \"English Drape\" house style. 

If you had walked into their shop at 30 Savile Row around 1988, you likely would have found:

• A relatively quiet, understated atmosphere rather than a luxury retail experience.
• Few signs of marketing or branding. The firm was famously discreet. Long-serving cutters and tailors working from paper patterns stored for individual clients.
• Customers that included aristocrats, business leaders, actors, and style-conscious professionals who valued continuity over fashion.
• Suits with soft shoulders, a draped chest, high armholes, and remarkable comfort compared with the more structured military-influenced cuts still common elsewhere. 

The late 1980s were not considered a glamorous peak for Savile Row generally. London menswear was being influenced by Italian tailoring, Armani\'s softer silhouettes, and changing workplace dress codes. Many traditional houses were trying to adapt. Anderson & Sheppard\'s response was essentially: keep doing what they had always done. 

One interesting detail is that by the late 1980s, the company was owned by the family of businessman Tiny Rowland, who had acquired it in the late 1970s. Yet ownership changes were largely invisible to clients. The house culture remained conservative and craft-focused. 

Stylistically, an Anderson & Sheppard suit from 1988 would not look dramatically different from one made in 1958 or even today. That\'s part of why vintage A&S garments are so prized: they avoided the exaggerated fashions of the era—huge shoulder pads, very low buttoning stances, and aggressive power-suit styling. Their clothes tended to age exceptionally well because they were never particularly fashionable to begin with.
