Although its inscription originated with the coinage of Northern Song China, this particular specimen is attributed by the grading service to Annam—historic Vietnam—during approximately the 15th to 17th centuries.

It is therefore not presented as an official Northern Song issue. Instead, it belongs to an intriguing tradition of later Annamese cash coins inspired by respected Chinese monetary designs.

📜 THE STORY

More than four centuries before this coin was cast, China’s Northern Song emperor Renzong issued the original Huang Song Tong Bao coins.

Emperor Renzong ruled from 1022 to 1063, overseeing one of the most culturally sophisticated periods of the Song Dynasty. The original Huang Song Tong Bao was issued from approximately 1039 to 1054 and became widely recognized through commerce and circulation.

Chinese cash coins did not remain confined within China.

For centuries, ships, merchants and caravans carried Chinese currency throughout East and Southeast Asia. In Vietnam, Chinese-style round coins with square central holes became deeply integrated into the local monetary system. Vietnamese mints and private workshops produced their own coins while sometimes preserving—or creatively reinterpreting—inscriptions inherited from earlier Chinese issues.

This Annamese coin represents that remarkable continuation.
