Wonderful antique mid-19th-century cased photographic portrait depicting an unidentified man and woman seated together, likely husband and wife. Their clothing, pose, and the decorative presentation are consistent with portrait photography of approximately the 1850s–1860s / Civil War era. The photograph is housed behind an ornate gold-tone/brass-colored decorative mat and preserver, with a rectangular opening featuring rounded corners. The reverse of the case shows considerable age-related discoloration and wear and appears to have an old handwritten marking that may read 1847. The image appears to possibly be a daguerreotype, although we have not removed it from its housing to verify the photographic process. It could potentially be another early photographic process such as an ambrotype.
