A charming and unusual antique automaton toy, dating to the late 19th century (last patent date 1886, retail label from Kyte and Harris).
This two-dimensional clockwork mechanism depicts a comedic scene of a gentleman in nightclothes and tasseled cap, armed with a carpet beater, attempting to swat a rat as it creeps toward him — a wonderful animated piece from the victorian era.
The scene is beautifully hand-colored and detailed, set within a glazed display case with a wooden rear panel. The case retains its original retailer\'s label from Kyte and Harris, and the mechanism bears a patent date of 1886. A rare survivor of Victorian mechanical toy-making, ideal for collectors of automata, mechanical antiques, or unusual folk art curiosities.
