Wonderful antique folding chess and backgammon game set, likely dating to the 19th century / Victorian era.
The exterior features a leather-covered chessboard in red and brown with gilt-tooled borders and extensive age-related patina. The interior opens to a leather backgammon board with red and dark points, gilt detailing, decorative impressed motifs, and tooled ornamentation. It appears that the original edges were painted in a marble design to mimic books from this era which had the marbled edges.
Included are:
- Complete 32-piece wooden chess set
- Hand-turned chessmen with carved knights
- Weighted chess pieces with metal inserts visible on the bases
- 30 turned wooden backgammon checkers-15 light and 15 dark
- Original folding leather-covered game board/case
The light pieces appear to be a pale close-grained hardwood such as boxwood, while the dark pieces are a rich dark brown hardwood or ebonized wood. I have not confirmed the exact wood species and am therefore not representing them as ebony.
ConditionThe set shows substantial but very attractive antique wear throughout, including rubbing, surface loss, fading, scratches, edge wear, and age-related deterioration to portions of the leather covering. The interior remains visually striking, with much of the original gilt decoration still present. There is also an old handwritten notation on one side of the case, possibly a former owner, dealer, inventory, or price notation.
The backgammon checkers are complete at 30 total. No dice or doubling cube are included.
This set has not been restored or refinished and retains the patina accumulated over many decades.
A beautiful decorative and collectible antique games set with genuine character, equally appealing displayed open as a chess/backgammon set or closed as an antique leather game board.
