The Lion and the Mouse
Original antique French oil painting, the fable of the lion and the mouse, a captured lion in a landscape with a palm tree, French School, 19th century, signed Huber lower right, in an ornate gilt frame.
French School: the painter is not identified, the place and period are what the picture itself tells us.
A lion stands caught in a rocky clearing, under a tall tree, while a palm rises against a pale evening sky. The story is Aesop\'s fable, retold by La Fontaine: the lion once spared a mouse, and when hunters trapped him, the mouse came back and gnawed him free. Here the great beast waits in the clearing, and his rescue is the smallest thing in the picture.
