Antique 2-Gallon Haxstun Ottman & Co Stoneware Crock + Lid Cobalt Bee Sting 1870 For Sale

For sale is a highly collectible 19th-century American salt-glazed stoneware crock made by the renowned Haxstun & Co. pottery out of Fort Edward, New York.This piece features a beautifully applied, hand-painted cobalt blue "bee sting" (or "lazy 8" swirl) folk art motif beneath a stylized, impressed number "2" denoting its two-gallon capacity. The maker's stamp—"HAXSTUN & CO. / FORT EDWARD, N.Y."—is impressed clearly into the clay above the capacity mark, precisely dating this piece to the late 1870s or early 1880s (circa 1875–1882).Crucially, this crock comes complete with its matching original lid, which is incredibly rare to find intact after nearly 150 years.Dimensions:

Condition Report:
This crock has been preserved beautifully but does exhibit two notable rim chips typical of utility stoneware of this age (please examine all photos closely before purchasing):

• There is one large, shallow chip (~1.5 inches wide) on the exterior upper rim.
• There is one smaller chip on the interior upper rim.
• Lid shows some manufacturing imperfections.
• Overall Integrity: Aside from the rim chips, the body, both molded lug/ear handles, base, and lid are completely intact. There are no running hairline cracks, structural splits, or modern repairs. The interior features its clean, original dark brown Albany slip glaze. Beautiful authentic glaze crazing and tiny kiln firing pops are present, adding fantastic historic character.
