Antique Chinese / Taiwanese Temple Architectural Carved Wood Panel
Beautiful old hand-carved architectural panel featuring an intricate pierced and relief-carved figural scene, finished in traditional red lacquer with parcel-gilt decoration and small polychrome accents.
The composition depicts several elaborately dressed figures gathered around a pavilion or balcony, including a standing attendant holding a parasol, additional seated and standing figures, stylized architecture, foliage and extensive pierced openwork.
The carving is constructed from wood and retains substantial evidence of age and traditional workmanship on both the front and unfinished reverse.
Family provenance: this piece was acquired in Taiwan during the 1970s while the family was there in connection with the U.S. Army and has remained in the same family collection since.
The exact temple, individual carver and date of manufacture are unfortunately no longer known. Because those details cannot presently be independently documented, the piece is being offered based upon its physical construction, traditional carving, age, decoration and family provenance rather than being assigned to a specific dynasty or temple.

The panel has a substantial red-painted outer frame surrounding the separately detailed pierced carving.
Condition:
Authentic aged condition with extensive surface character. There is visible wear and loss to the red lacquer and gilding, areas of exposed wood, scratches, abrasions, small chips, age cracks, edge losses, discoloration and accumulated patina. The reverse is unfinished and shows the pierced construction, tool/work marks, old surface wear and staining. A later hanging tab has been attached to the reverse.
Despite the wear, the principal figural carving remains remarkably complete and visually strong.
No restoration or repainting history is known.
