Antique Composition Skeleton Doll Halloween Decoration c.1920s–40s 4”
A wonderfully creepy antique composition skeleton figure, dating to the first half of the 20th century, likely circa 1920s–1940s.
This little skeleton has tremendous early Halloween character. The body is made of composition with a molded skull, deep black eye sockets, painted mouth details and black-painted rib markings. The arms and legs are attached with coiled metal wire, allowing them to move and giving the figure a wonderfully primitive, handmade mechanical quality.
When the legs are fully extended, the skeleton measures approximately 4 inches long.
There is a black hanging cord coming from the top of the head, suggesting it was intended to be suspended as a Halloween decoration or incorporated into a larger holiday display.
The lower torso and hip area retain pink crepe paper residue, likely from an old costume, wrapping or decorative element that was once attached to the figure. Some of this residue may possibly come away with careful cleaning, but I have left it exactly as found and make no guarantee that it can be completely removed.
Measurements
Approximately:
* 4 inches long with legs fully outstretched
Condition
Good antique condition with obvious age and wear.
The composition surface shows expected discoloration, small marks, rubbing, tiny losses and general surface wear. There is visible pink crepe paper residue around the lower torso/hip area. The wire limbs show age-related darkening and oxidation.
The arms and legs remain attached and movable. The hanging cord is present at the top of the head.
