Antique handmade folk-art walking stick owned by my great-great-grandfather, William Millerton Phillips. Phillips was originally from Georgia and later lived in Minden, Louisiana. According to a handwritten family note preserved with his photograph, he was a Confederate veteran who fought in the Battle of Chickamauga.
The walking stick was fashioned from a naturally irregular, thorny branch with a curved root or burl forming the handle. It retains a very dark old surface and a brass-colored metal ferrule at the bottom. The handle and shaft show the wear expected from age and use, giving it wonderful primitive character.
The form resembles traditional blackthorn or shillelagh-type walking sticks, although the precise species of wood has not been identified.

The walking stick feels very sturdy. It has age-related surface wear, scuffs, small natural irregularities, and wear to the ferrule, as shown in the photographs. I have not cleaned or polished it.
