Antique French Confit Pot 19th Century, Yellow Glaze with drips, H29cm For Sale

A beautiful yellow glazed French confit pot with drips,also known as pot à confit, is a traditional half glazed ceramic pot that was primarily used in the southwest of France. With a weathered patina, this pot measures approx. 29cm tall and 26.5cm wide (handle to handle).
These pots were used before the invention of refrigeration to preserve meats cooked in fat, a technique known as confit, and half buried in the ground. Hand made, the glazing process created the characterful markings / drips with a yellow glazewith variation in tone.
The upper part coated with a yellow (or honey-colored) glaze, which helped seal and protect against moisture.The bottom part unglazed, as it was often in contact with earth or damp surfaces during storage.
This pot has markings and patina in keeping with its age and use, including rim and body chips. It at one stage had a drainage hole made in the bottom but this had later been filled in and repaired, as pictured. A lovely addition to any home.
