A highly decorative antique French mechanical mantel clock dating from the latter part of the 19th century.
The elaborate architectural case is designed in the French Renaissance Revival taste, with extensive pierced foliate scrollwork, classical columns, shell and acanthus decoration and an ornate urn-shaped finial.
The circular enamel chapter ring has bold black Roman numerals with contrasting red minute markings, surrounding an elaborate pierced gilt centre and decorative hands.
The rear opens through a hinged glazed bezel to reveal the original-style circular French brass mechanical movement and pendulum. The movement is numbered and is a traditional two-train design for timekeeping and striking.
The gilt case remains particularly bright and impressive and displays extremely well. There are minor marks, rubbing and signs of age consistent with an antique clock of this period; please study the photographs carefully as these form part of the description.
