Beautiful and unusual set of 11 antique German majolica plates by G.S. Zell (Georg Schmider), Zell am Harmersbach, Baden, Germany.Based on the documented period of use for the G.S. Zell maker’s mark, these plates date to approximately 1907-1928, placing them at roughly 100 years old.Each plate measures approximately 6 1/2 inches in diameter and features a dimensional molded botanical design with overlapping green leaves against a warm cream/yellow ground. The raised leaves are individually hand painted with pink to deep reddish accents, and each plate is finished with a hand-painted brown rim.Hand-Painted Color VariationsOne of the wonderful characteristics of this set is that the plates are hand painted, so they are not completely identical.There are visible variations in color from plate to plate. Some leaves have deeper red or pink coloring, while others have softer or lighter coloration. The brown-painted rims also vary somewhat in shade and intensity.These variations are consistent with the hand-painted nature of the pottery and give each plate its own individual character.G.S. 176The number 176 is a documented Zell design number.G.S. Zell was associated with the Georg Schmider pottery works in Zell am Harmersbach, Baden, Germany. This type of molded, glazed earthenware is known and collected as German majolica.Based on the maker’s mark, these examples date to approximately 1907-1928.ConditionThe set is in very good antique condition considering its age of approximately 100 years.There are no noticeable cracks on any of the 11 plates.One plate has a very tiny chip along the brown-painted rim. Please see the photographs for the condition of this area.Each plate also has three small kiln/stilt support marks on the underside. These marks are consistently present on all 11 plates and are associated with the original firing/manufacturing process. They are not later chips or breaks.Please expect minor irregularities associated with antique, hand-painted and kiln-fired pottery.
