Offered here is a rare and exceptionally characterful large antique German mohair lion,dating to approximately the 1920s–1930s andprobably by Bing.

This impressive early lion is unusually large, measuring approximately24.4 inches (62 cm) overall including the tail,with a body length of approximately 19.7 inches (50 cm)and a height of approximately 12.6 inches (32 cm).

No maker\'s button, label or other identifying mark is present.The attribution to Bing is based on the period, construction, materials andstylistic characteristics of the lion.

One of the most fascinating features of this lion is its early construction.Where age-related openings are present, the original interior can be clearly seen:the body is firmly formed using tightly packed natural straw strips, while substantialmetal wire supports are visible inside the limbs.

The hand-painted facial details give the lion an exceptionally expressive appearance.The nose, whisker markings, eyebrows, eye surrounds, ears and paws all retainoriginal dark painted/shaded decoration.

The lion is in genuine antique condition with substantial age-related wear consistentwith its approximately 90–100 years of age.

There is thinning and loss to the mohair in various areas, particularly around theface, muzzle and paws. There are age-related openings and tears to the mouth andlimbs, through which the original straw construction and internal wire supportscan be seen. There is also minor separation/opening to the fabric and stitchingin places.

The original mane and tail with its long-haired tuft remain present, as do both eyes.The distinctive original painted and shaded details remain clearly visible.

No restoration has been carried out.The lion has deliberately been left in its original antique condition.The exposed areas also provide an unusual opportunity to see and document thetraditional internal construction.
