Up for sale is an authentic antique German Putz wooly sheep figurine, traditionally handcrafted in the famous Erzgebirge (Ore Mountains) region of Germany. These charming miniature animals were produced by local cottage-industry woodworkers to populate elaborate Christmas nativity scenes and winter "Putz" village displays during the early 20th century.This primitive piece is constructed with a carved wooden body core and the highly collectible, flat-carved "matchstick" wooden legs. The head features molded ears and tiny painted eyes. Notably, this figurine features its original, intact blue paper belly band wrapped tightly around its midsection. Rather than a collar, this band serves the critical historical function of binding and securing the natural wool fleece wrap firmly to the smooth wooden body core.Condition Report:
