Antique German Schiller’s Complete Works | Four-Book Set | Late 19th–Early 20th Century
This is a beautiful antique collection of the works of Friedrich Schiller (1759–1805), one of Germany’s most celebrated poets, playwrights, and philosophers.
Published in Leipzig by Max Hesse’s Verlag, Schiller’s sämmtliche Werke (Schiller’s Complete Works) comprises twelve volumes bound into four handsome books.
The collection includes Schiller’s poetry, plays, and other literary works, accompanied by a biography and literary assessment written by German literary historian Gustav Karpeles (1848–1909).
Each book features a richly decorated red-brown leather spine with gilt lettering and ornate floral detailing, beautifully marbled paper-covered boards, leather corners, and striking red page edges.
One particularly charming detail is an original bookseller’s label from Bruno Meyer & Co., a historic book, art, and music dealer located in Königsberg, East Prussia (now Kaliningrad, Russia).
The books are believed to date to approximately 1890–1915, although no publication date has been located.
Condition: Antique condition with considerable wear to the leather spines, edges, and corners, including areas of leather loss and rubbing. The spines have boom tape. Interior pages show age-related toning. Some loose pages.
