Wonderful antique painted glass panel depicting a Landsknecht soldier, the distinctive European mercenary infantryman associated with the late 15th and 16th centuries.
The standing figure is portrayed in elaborate period dress with a broad feathered hat, slashed and puffed clothing, sword at his waist and a long polearm. A finely rendered landscape with trees, distant architecture and hills fills the background.
The decoration is executed primarily in grisaille with golden-yellow staining, a traditional technique associated with Continental European painted glass and historic cabinet panels, often referred to as Kabinettscheiben. The image is painted on one side of the glass and remains visible from both sides.
The glass has wonderful age and character, including natural waviness, bubbles and small inclusions. It is surrounded by a dark metal/lead perimeter frame with a simple wire hanger at the top. Please see the photographs for the construction and condition.
No signature or date has been found. While the subject and technique follow the German and Swiss Renaissance tradition of Landsknecht glass panels, the exact country of origin and age have not been determined.
A striking piece of antique European decorative glass with an exceptionally detailed military figure and beautiful old surface.

Condition: The panel displays beautifully with age-appropriate surface wear and variation. There are two fine hairline cracks extending from the lower edge into the glass; neither extends through the full panel. They are shown clearly in the close-up photographs. The glass remains intact within its metal perimeter frame. Please review all photographs carefully as they are considered part of the condition description.
