Antique Anatolian Rug Pillow / Dowry Storage Bag – Approx. 80 Years Old
A remarkable handwoven Anatolian textile, dating to approximately the 1940s, preserved in exceptionally good condition.
Measuring approximately 39–46 cm wide × 80 cm long (15.4–18.1 × 31.5 in), this is much more than a decorative vintage pillow. It is a beautiful example of traditional Anatolian textile culture and a particularly interesting piece for collectors.
The front features a wonderfully detailed knotted-pile composition with a rich deep red field, floral and geometric motifs, and beautiful accents of ivory, green, orange, purple and dark tones. The original handwoven striped backing is still intact, which adds greatly to the character and collectible appeal of the piece.
One particularly interesting feature is the small opening along the side. Pieces of this type could also serve as practical textile storage, with clothing, personal belongings or dowry textiles placed inside, while the filled piece could simultaneously function as a cushion or pillow. This surviving construction gives the piece an especially fascinating connection to everyday Anatolian life of its period.
Despite being approximately 80 years old, its condition is excellent. It has retained an unusually fresh, well-preserved appearance and much of its original character, almost as though it has only recently left the loom.
The piece has been professionally cleaned and is ready for display, collection or decorative use.
Its original backing, unusual construction, age and excellent state of preservation make it particularly appealing as a collectible ethnographic textile, while its striking colors and elongated proportions also make it a beautiful statement piece for a distinctive interior.
