Beautiful antique Japanese majolica jardinière / planter, approximately 10" across the top and 7½–8" tall.
This substantial piece features a rich amber-brown glazed body decorated with highly dimensional raised cream flowers, green leaves, vines and buds, finished with a lovely scalloped rim. The relief work wraps around the planter and gives it wonderful depth and character.
The piece is impressed JAPAN and also bears a small rectangular impressed maker's mark. Based on the mark and characteristics of the pottery, it is attributed to Awaji/Sanpei pottery; because the mark is partially obscured by the original glaze, the maker attribution is not guaranteed.
The glaze shows extensive fine crazing consistent with age, along with normal vintage surface wear. The unglazed foot shows expected wear from use. Please examine all photographs closely, as they are an important part of the condition description.
A beautiful and unusually large example of early Japanese decorative pottery—excellent for an Awaji, Japanese majolica or antique art pottery collection.
