Antique Japanese Kutani Hand-Painted Bird & Floral Vase – Gilt – Marked
A charming antique Japanese Kutani ware vase featuring richly hand-painted bird and floral decoration with colorful overglaze enamels and gilt highlights.
The body is decorated with a traditional Japanese bird-and-flower scene featuring chrysanthemums and other blossoms, foliage, landscape elements, and birds. Rich shades of green, blue, yellow, iron red, and gold create a highly detailed design around the vase.
The elongated neck is finished in a deep iron-red ground with intricate gilt scrolling motifs, complemented by colorful geometric decoration around the shoulder. The hand-painted details, slightly irregular form, and visible variations give the piece considerable character.
The underside bears a worn iron-red handwritten three-character mark believed to read “Kutani Zo” (九谷造). The mark shows significant age-related wear and is therefore described conservatively rather than attributed to a particular artist or workshop.
Based on the form, decoration, construction, base, and marking style, the vase is believed to date to approximately the late Meiji to Taisho period / early 20th century. Exact age and maker have not been independently authenticated.

A beautiful small-scale example of Japanese Kutani decorative pottery, suitable for a collection of Japanese ceramics, Asian antiques, Meiji-era decorative arts, or as a distinctive display piece.
Condition:
Good antique condition with age-related wear consistent with age and use. There is wear and fading to areas of the gilt and hand-painted decoration, together with surface marks and natural production imperfections. The unglazed underside shows substantial natural wear, discoloration, kiln characteristics, and visible turning/tool marks.
Please carefully review all photographs, including the close-up photographs of the decoration, rim, interior, and base, as they form an important part of the condition description.
