Antique Japanese Shishi Menuki Male & Female Lion Pair Samurai Sword Fittings For Sale

This listing is for an antique Japanese pair of menuki, the decorative sword fittings traditionally placed beneath the wrapping of a Japanese sword handle (tsuka).

The pair depicts a male and female Shishi (唐獅子 / Japanese guardian lions), each shown in a different dynamic and lively pose.

Despite their relatively small size, these menuki feature remarkably fine and intricate carving. The bodies are covered with delicate engraved lines representing the fur, while the faces, manes, paws, claws, tails, and muscular forms are rendered with impressive detail.

The two Shishi have distinctly different poses and expressions, giving the pair a lively sense of movement and character. At only approximately 32.5 mm (1.28 in.) in length, the amount of detail incorporated into these compact sword fittings is particularly striking.

The surfaces display an attractive dark brown aged patina, together with areas of natural greenish oxidation. These variations in color and surface texture contribute to the antique character of the pieces.

The reverse sides show darkened surfaces and age-related wear, as shown in the photographs.

The menuki are unsigned.
