Portrait of a Magistrate in a Red Robe
Antique late 17th century French portrait of a magistrate in a red robe and full wig, oil on canvas, French School, Louis XIV period, in the manner of Nicolas de Largillière, for restoration, unframed.
He looks out at us calmly, his face framed by a great wig of pale curls that falls far past his shoulders. His robe is a deep scarlet, and at his throat hang the long white bands of a man of the law, which he holds lightly between two fingers. Lace falls from his cuffs over the back of his hand. The scarlet robe and the white bands were the dress of the high courts of France under Louis XIV, and even through the damage, the face and the hand are still the best-painted things on the canvas.
