THE PROVENANCEThe original maker\'s label confirms attribution to C.A. Cook & Co., Cambridgeport, MA — a documented Victorian-era New England furniture manufacturer. Labeled, authenticated American Victorian furniture in restored usable condition is genuinely rare.
THE RESTORATIONThis chair was completely disassembled to its individual components, inspected joint by joint, properly re-glued throughout, and expertly reassembled by a skilled artisan with deep experience in antique furniture. This is a full structural restoration. Every joint was addressed. The chair is 100% solid, tight, and fully functional. The swivel seat rotates freely and adjusts height smoothly via the original wooden disc-on-disc swivel mechanism - intact and operating exactly as designed over a century ago.
THE DETAILS
* Crest Rail: A masterfully hand-carved Rococo Revival cartouchea shell-and-fan motif surmounting a vase or urn form, flanked by C-scroll volutes - with acanthus scroll terminals at each end of the crest. This is fine hand carving, not machine work. Up close, the precision and depth of the relief are striking.
* Spindle Back: Outer heavy turned baluster spindles frame a set of lighter center spindles with bead-turned midpoints — a sophisticated mixed composition that speaks to the quality tier of this piece.
* Base & Legs: The underside reveals extraordinary craftsmanship - a multi-tier turned central column with vase-form elements, four splayed legs each featuring multiple stacked vase-and-ring turnings, and fully turned cross-stretchers connecting them. Most Victorian piano chairs have basic legs. This one has a base that functions as a work of lathe art.
*Casters - The Star of the Show: The four original casters are premium Victorian glass-ball claw feet - the figural cast-metal shank features sculptural relief detail, terminating in a full claw gripping a glass or crystal ball. All four are original, all four are intact. Glass-ball casters are a specifically sought feature among Victorian furniture collectors and are increasingly hard to find unbroken and in place.
* Swivel Mechanism: The original wooden disc-on-disc swivel plate is present and functional. Not replaced with modern hardware — the authentic Victorian mechanism, working as designed.
