Up for sale is an exceptional antique New York Central Railroad passenger station sign reading:
“NEW YORK CENTRAL R.R. TRAINS”
This is an impressive, very large architectural railroad sign constructed of wood with raised molded trim, dark finish, and large gold-colored lettering. The sign retains old hanging eye hardware at both ends, indicating that it was originally intended to be suspended overhead, likely above a station passageway, waiting area, concourse entrance, or route leading passengers toward New York Central trains.

* Condition: Original as-found condition with substantial age-related surface wear, paint loss, scratches, edge wear, wood loss and other evidence of long use and storage. Please examine all photographs carefully.
The construction and surviving hardware are particularly interesting. Old eye fittings positioned toward opposite ends appear consistent with an overhead installation in which the sign would have been suspended from chains or rods and displayed above passenger traffic.
The exact station from which this sign originated has not been established. Because the wording specifically directs passengers to “New York Central R.R. Trains,” it may have been used in a union station, connecting terminal, shared passenger facility, or other location where travelers needed to distinguish New York Central service from other railroads.
This is not being represented as a Grand Central Terminal sign, as no documentary provenance establishing a Grand Central connection is currently known.
The enormous scale, architectural molding, old hardware, wonderfully aged surface and unmistakable New York Central lettering make this an outstanding display piece for a serious collection, railroad museum, historic depot, restaurant, railroad room, or transportation collection.
