This listing is for one antique souvenir creamer which was Made in Germany for Scituate Grocery Co. The front has an image of Old Scituate Lighthouse, also in Scituate, Massachusetts.
During the late 19th and early 20th centuries, it was a common practice for local town mercantiles and shops like the now-defunct Scituate Grocery Co. to commission imported German porcelain souvenirs to sell to summer tourists and proud locals. This piece specifically commemorates the historic Old Scituate Light, which was built in 1811 on Cedar Point at the entrance to Scituate Harbor. The lighthouse is most famously known for the legendary \"Army of Two\" incident during the War of 1812. In September 1814, the lighthouse keeper\'s two teenage daughters, Rebecca and Abigail Bates, bravely played a fife and drum loudly behind a stand of cedar trees to trick attacking British naval forces into believing an American town militia was gathering, successfully causing the British to retreat.
Good to good-plus condition. No chips or cracks. No inside scuffing or staining. There is some gold on one side of the creamer, which matches the gold used on the accents. The image and lettering on the front show very light wear and remain overwhelmingly intact. The base displays light wear. Please see the pictures for more information and to help with your decision.
