Antique Pair of Chinese Black Lacquer Miniature Boxes with Gilt Decoration & Inlaid Faces
An attractive pair of antique miniature black lacquer boxes, probably Chinese, dating to the late 19th or early 20th century.
Both boxes are decorated with finely detailed gilt scenes depicting figures in traditional Oriental dress, surrounded by architectural elements, trees and garden landscapes.
The figures feature separately applied or inlaid pale faces, possibly bone or another light-coloured material, creating a beautiful contrast with the black lacquer and delicate gold decoration.
Both boxes have fitted hinged lids. One features a single interior compartment, while the other is divided into three sections.
The boxes display an attractive aged appearance, with surface wear, scratches, rubbing and partial losses to the gilt decoration, consistent with age and use.
Origin: Probably China
Period: Late 19th – Early 20th century (attributed)
Material: Black lacquer over a lightweight base, with gilt decoration and applied or inlaid faces
Dimensions (largest): 7.5 × 5.5 × 3 cm
Condition: Good antique condition with age-related wear and losses to the decoration, as shown in the photographs.
An unusual and charming pair of miniature lacquer boxes, offered together.
