A substantial antique Scandinavian bentwood tine, or svepask, combining traditional wooden construction with unusually rich carved and painted folk decoration.
The cylindrical body is constructed from vertical wooden staves encircled by multiple dark bentwood bands. Around the body is a continuous frieze of stylized geometric and foliate motifs painted in muted red, green, black and ochre. The fitted wooden lid is particularly attractive, with chip-carved floral and leaf motifs accented with color and a carved carrying handle extending between upright supports.
The contrast between the warm natural wood, dark structural bands and restrained polychrome decoration gives the piece exceptional graphic character. At approximately 12 inches in diameter, it also has considerably more presence than many surviving tine boxes.

Antique condition with wear consistent with age and use. Visible surface wear, scratches and abrasions, with losses and breaks to portions of the exterior bentwood bands. The repetition of the dark bentwood bands gives the vessel an almost basket-like structure, while the carved and painted decoration introduces the individual hand of its maker. The decorated lid is especially strong—the object remains visually interesting whether displayed open or closed.
