D. Dolphin AntiquesOffering Interesting & UnusualAntique Accessories & Early Vintage CollectiblesAntique Shaker Bonnet Woven Poplar, Hand Made Basket Weave, Primitive Folk Art.
Description: This authentic woven poplar bonnet was hand made by the Shakers, who produced these both for their own use, and for sale to visitors and tourists as part of their "fancy goods" industry. The bonnet is made of finely cut, thin pieces of poplar wood, which were woven into the bonnet using a mold. The finished edging is also made of woven material, likely straw. As they're woven of fine wooden splint, they tend to be a bit delicate and fragile. This particular bonnet has survived in good condition. Although likely too delicate to wear, this bonnet makes for a lovely display among your antique Shaker, primitive, or early Bonnet collection. Note: I will ship this delicate item double-boxed and via Priority to ensure its safe arrival.
Condition: Very good antique condition; there is a slight crease as seen in the photos, but all appears intact. There's also a mild stain line on one side that is more pronounced in these brightly lit photos than to the eye. There's some discoloration along the edging, likely due to some oxidation of wiring underneath to hold its shape. It leans slightly when on a flat surface, so I've always displayed it on a hat stand. (See photos.)
Size: Approx. 8" H by 12" L along the top.
