Antique Sioux Beaded Possible Bag c.1900 | Lane-Stitched Hide Bands:
$1295.00

Up for sale is an antique Native American beaded hide bag, attributed to the Sioux and dating to circa 1900 based on style, materials, and patina.
Eight bands of beadwork, each one laid bead by bead in fine lane stitching, the rose-pink ground setting off blocks of cobalt, turquoise, green, and yellow. Work this patient stops you in your tracks, and my father spent forty years getting stopped: shows, shops, and kitchen tables across the country, buying only what his eye trusted. This bag is what that kind of looking finds.
Artistry & CraftsmanshipThe front of the bag carries eight horizontal bands of fine lane-stitched glass seed beadwork in rose pink, cobalt blue, turquoise, green, and yellow, each band centered with a geometric block pattern. Beaded strips run down both side edges. The bag closes with the original buckskin drawstring ties, with long hide straps at the sides.

Provenance & HistoryThis piece comes from the collection of my late father, Gary Grouse, a dedicated collector and historian of antique Native American art who specialized in Plains tribes beadwork. He collected carefully across the U.S. from the 1960s through the early 2000s, and his eye for authenticity was the filter every piece passed through. He identified each piece's tribal affiliation and period as he collected. My mother shared those decades of collecting with him and remains our living reference on the collection's history. If you'd like to know anything further about this piece, just ask and I'll tell you everything we know.
