Antique Stanley Bailey No. 4 Smooth Plane – Type 11 (1910-1918)
Up for sale is a vintage Stanley Bailey No. 4 smoothing plane, identified as a Type 11 based on the "U.S. PAT APR-19-10" casting on the frog and the Sweetheart (SW) logo — placing manufacture between roughly 1910 and 1918.
Details:
• Cast iron body with "STANLEY" and "BAILEY" markings intact and legible
• Original rosewood-style tote (rear handle) and knob
• Functional depth adjustment knob and lateral adjustment lever
• Blade/iron and cap iron present and intact
Condition:
Sold as-is, in estimated user/project grade condition. Japanning (black finish) shows significant wear and flaking with surface rust visible on portions of the sole. The tote shows some wear/chipping at the base consistent with age and use. No cracks noted in the wood handles. A great candidate for restoration or as a working shop tool once cleaned, sole-flattened, and the blade is sharpened.
A great piece for:
Woodworkers looking for a solid user-grade vintage plane, or collectors wanting a common but honest Type 11 example to restore.
