Striking late 19th century Victorian jacquard-woven furnishing textile featuring a wonderfully graphic equestrian design. The central field depicts four symmetrically arranged horses surrounding a floral medallion, framed by geometric, foliate and vessel motifs.
The design is woven through the textile and reverses from one side to the other, creating two distinctly different color presentations. A beautiful early furnishing textile with strong decorative appeal, particularly suited for display, textile study or an antique textile collection.
Measures approximately 38 x 38 inches.
Antique condition with substantial age-related wear throughout, including areas of thinning and open weave, scattered losses, fraying and wear along the perimeter, and loose/exposed threads. The edges may originally have had fringe or another finishing treatment that is now lost or removed. There may also be a few scattered very faint areas of discoloration/staining. The textile is somewhat irregular in shape from age and wear. Please review photographs carefully.
A small blank woven fabric tag is sewn along one edge; the tag appears consistent with the age of the textile, although no maker’s name or other identifying information remains visible. Please see sixth photograph for close-up.
