" Tentatively entitled Portrait of a Woman, the subject work is an oil on canvas portrait of a woman wearing a grey dress with a lace collar. and an elaborate lace mantilla with pink flowers. Depicted from the ribs towards, the unknown model does not make direct eye contact with the viewer , but rather looks slightly to her left. She is positioned against a monochromatic dark background, which allows the pale flesh tones, lace accessories and red jewelry to emerge dramatically. The painting is thought to date to the 1830s. "
Bought in Seattle Washington, in October of 1968, by a family member at William Davis and Sons. Sold as "Portrait of a Lady" by Samuel FB Morse. No signature is visible although it could be under the frame. We have the original receipt, which can be sent to buyer.
