Ancient Roman bronze AE2, also commonly described as a maiorina, of Emperor Arcadius. Struck at the Alexandria mint, third officina, approximately AD 383–388.
Obverse: Pearl- or rosette-diademed, draped, and cuirassed bust of Arcadius facing right.
Obverse legend:
D N ARCADIVS P F AVG
The legend expands to Dominus Noster Arcadius Pius Felix Augustus, meaning approximately “Our Lord Arcadius, Dutiful and Fortunate Emperor.”
Reverse: Arcadius standing facing with his head turned right, holding a labarum or military standard and a globe. He places one foot upon a kneeling or bound captive.
Reverse legend:
VIRTVS EXERCITI
The reverse legend translates approximately as “The Valor of the Army.”
Mintmark: The exergue appears to read ALEΓ, indicating the Alexandria mint and third officina. The final character is the Greek letter gamma and may resemble an “L” or “F” because of the coin’s wear and style of engraving.

The coin retains a well-defined and attractive portrait of Arcadius. Considerable detail remains visible in the imperial diadem, hair, facial features, armor, and drapery. Much of the obverse legend is readable. On the reverse, the standing emperor, military standard, globe, captive, surrounding legend, and portions of the Alexandria mintmark remain identifiable.
The coin exhibits circulation wear, surface deposits, scattered roughness, scratches, and areas of discoloration. It appears to have been cleaned and possibly polished at some point in the past. Some deposits remain around the portrait’s diadem and within portions of the reverse design. Please examine all photographs carefully for the exact condition.
