Dating to circa 1920, this striking Austrian cold-painted bronze pheasant sculpture is beautifully mounted upon a substantial, richly veined black marble base. The bird appears to depict a male common or ring-necked pheasant, recognizable by its distinctive elongated tail and colorful plumage, rendered here in wonderfully detailed shades of deep green, russet red, bronze and gold.Austrian cold-painted bronzes of the late 19th and early 20th centuries were celebrated for their remarkably naturalistic modeling and hand-applied coloration, and this handsome example captures the elegance and character of the pheasant particularly well. Fine sculptural detailing brings definition to the feathers, body and extraordinarily long tail, while the aged painted surface lends the bronze an appealing antique patina.With its generous proportions and substantial 6-pound weight, this is far more than a small desk accessory.
