Art Deco Spelter Sculpture, Seated Woman on Chevron Marble Base — French, 1920sKiet JaspersThe story and character of the piece
The Art Deco decade found one of its favorite subjects in the seated female figure, drapery swept back to suggest motion frozen mid-gesture — a pose that let sculptors show off the era's taste for streamlined, dynamic line even in a stationary object. Spelter, a zinc alloy cast and finished with a bronze-toned patina, was the material of choice for decorative figures of this kind: it took fine detail well and cost a fraction of solid bronze, putting sculptural pieces like this one within reach of a much wider public than bronze alone ever could.
This sculpture, French, 1920s, follows that formula closely. A spelter figure of a seated woman, her drapery flowing dramatically behind her, rests on a black and cream marble base cut in a sharp chevron pattern. Note how the drapery's folds are modeled with continuous, sweeping lines rather than broken into separate cast segments — the kind of confident, unified modeling that distinguishes a well-cast period figure from a crudely finished one. The bronze-toned patina remains rich across the figure, with the geometric precision of the chevron marble grounding the piece's movement in something architectural and still.
Whoever displayed this sculpture before you kept it well. The spelter and marble both show honest wear consistent with age, worth reviewing closely in the photos alongside this description, since spelter is a softer, more easily marked material than bronze. It is ready for a mantel, console, or display shelf.
