A charming late 18th-century British pastoral oil painting, attributed to the celebrated English artist George Morland (1763–1804).
The composition depicts a shepherd seated in a rural landscape with his wife and young daughter, the shepherd holding a shotgun. A small country cottage can be seen in the distant background, with trees, fields and atmospheric evening light creating a characteristic rustic pastoral setting.
The painting is unsigned. It is housed in an attractive period giltwood and gesso frame, with an old attribution plaque to the lower frame reading “G. MORLAND”. The attribution is offered as “Attributed to” and is not being sold as a definitively authenticated work by Morland.
The reverse shows an old canvas and stretcher construction. The canvas appears possibly to have been relined at some point, although this has not been professionally confirmed.

Condition
The painting is offered in antique condition, with age-related surface wear, craquelure and signs of its considerable age. There are areas of surface dirt/discolouration and some wear to the paint surface. The giltwood and gesso frame has age-related knocks, losses, rubbing and wear, consistent with an antique frame. The reverse suggests the canvas may have been relined, although this has not been confirmed.
