Large and highly dramatic 18th-century etching after the Dutch animal and hunting painterAbraham Hondius, depicting a ferocious bear attacked by a large pack of hunting dogs.
The composition is dominated by the powerful central figure of the bear defending itself against the surrounding hounds, several of which are shown being thrown, bitten or crushed during the struggle. The mountainous landscape and stormy sky heighten the dramatic character of the scene.
Size with margins :50,7 x 41,4 cm / 19,6 x 16,1 inches
Condition :A strong impression with the complete composition, title and engraved inscriptions preserved. The sheet shows age-related wear, including marginal tears and creases, small losses and handling marks, particularly along the upper and lower edges. Some spotting and surface soiling. The engraved image itself remains generally well preserved. Please refer to the photographs for full condition details.
