It details: "The Boro Budur is one of the architectural marvels of the world, the most elaborate Buddhist temple in existence. With its bas reliefs, representing scenes from the life of Buddha, its statuary, carvings, and architectural ornaments of every sort, it is a striking reminder of the high state of civilization in Java when modern Europe was emerging from barbarism. Built a couple of centuries after Rome had overrun by the Visigoths, traces of its former splendor still remain. The temple is a quadrangular pyramid, built against a hill. It rises 150 feet above the plain and we can count the seven walls of hewn lava blocks with narrow terraces between each, like a stairway up the hill. We can see the niches in the walls, four hundred of them, each with its great statue of Buddha. We can see the small domes on the upper terraces, each containing a statue of Buddha, and surmounting all, in the center, the supreme dome for the relics of the great teacher. Millions of weary feet have trod with awe the broad plaza before us in the centuries that have passed. Throngs of worshippers, garbed exactly as the simply yet picturesquely clad natives we see, have swarmed hither from all parts of the East. The huge, symbolic figures on the left have witnessed in impassive silence many a human drama as the crowds passed slowly by. It originated in Hindustan and has extended its way over the entire Indo-Chinese peninsula, to parts of Japan, into central Asia, and even to the ice and snow of Lapland."
