Beautiful and very skillfully executed pastel in original frame from early part of 20th century. Pastel does not appear to be signed but is so well done, I’m inclined to think it may be an early Carl Sammons, Harry Linder, or William Chandler. The way the artist has captured the light and sun bouncing off the water in the distance is really quite exquisite.
There are remnants of an old Oakland California framing/gallery sticker. I note that Sammons was a San Francisco Bay Area artist. It does have that slightly more subdued, atmospheric, tonalist element that you tended to see in Northern California art of the early 20th century. The work and frame appears circa 1910’s - 20’s and interestingly, Sammons specialized in pastels early in his career. Ultimately a mystery but there were a number of very accomplished pastel artists during this time, but even as an attributed or unknown, it’s a beautiful work and displays wonderfully in it’s original frame.Note, I have not attempted to remove from frame so it’s possible there is a concealed signature but I’d rather not disturb the work myself.
Pastel is in excellent condition and still under original glass, original frame with gilt highlight. Note some reflections in glass on some of my pics.
