DESCRIPTION
Chinese export porcelain armorial plate decorated in strong cobalt blue underglaze with the Wheler family crest above flowering bamboo sprays and ornamental rockwork. The composition is spacious and finely balanced with detailed chrysanthemum blooms and elegant branching motifs. The thick glaze and rich cobalt application create an almost relief-like decorative effect in areas of the design. A notable detail appears at the lower right branch where a cocoon-like form suggests a moth or butterfly emerging. This example corresponds to the Howard reference, page 590, section R6, relating to the Wheler family service circa 1755.
COLLECTOR\'S NOTE
David Sanctuary Howard illustrates this service in Chinese Armorial Porcelain, page 590, reference R6, attributing the crest to the Wheler family. The service is associated with East India Company trade and mid-Qianlong export porcelain production. Armorial wares of this period were specially commissioned for British families and remain highly collectible for their historical and genealogical interest.
