RIC VIII Antioch 45/46 (nearly identical)
**AN EXTREMELY RARE ISSUE WITH ROSETTE DIADEM**
The obverse portrait of Constantius is quite fantastic, with very sharp details and a lovely, expressive bust, the details of the hair being very well preserved, which we do not see everyday; the reverse is equally, if not more, impressive as the obverse, especially the detail on the Legionnaire/Soldier standing to the right of the standard, from his feet to his helmet, quite extraordinary and rarely seen in this fine condition
Both obverse and reverse hold the original, unaltered patina, again this is becoming very scarce these days as people tend to \'doctor\' coins in an attempt to \'enhance\' them; sometimes we have no choice but to preform \'surgery\' on a coin, so to speak, to remove bronze disease or encrustation, however this specimen is untouched and exquiste
As of the time of this listing, OCRE lists just four examples of RIC VIII Antioch 45 and ten examples of RIC VIII Antioch 46; both entries are nearly identical, with RIC 45 listed simply as \'Rosette\' and RIC 46 as \'Laurel and Rosette\', however to me, going by the photos provided by OCRE, there is no difference between them; indeed it is highly likely that the coins are actually from the same RIC entry, simply placed in the slot, so to speak
It is interesting that OCRE seems to suggest that RIC VIII 45 is the rarer of the two as this the listing Nummus-Bible shows nine examples of and vice versa; thus it is quite likely that the specimens listed online for RIC 45 and RIC 46 are actually of the same entry, mistakenly placed in the incorrect reference; granted, this is VERY easy to mistake, for the difference between what is considered plain Rosette and the combination of Laurel and Rosette is really like splitting hairs, however it absolutely DOES matter!
