\"The Way It Is\"is an autobiography of sorts by Major League Baseball Player Curt Flood. Flood won two World Series Championships with the St Louis Cardinals in 1964 and 1968. After the Cards lost the 1969 World Series to the Detroit Tigers when Denny McClain out pitched Bob Gibson in the seventh game, Flood was traded that off season to the Phillies. Flood refused to report and brought a federal lawsuit challenging MLB Reserve Clause and advocating for rights of free agency. While the United States Supreme Court ruled against him, there is no denying that the outfielder raised in Oakland, California, sacrificed his professional career for a principled idea that ultimately benefitted players of multiple sports. Co-written by Richard Carter with an introduction penned by All Star pitcher Vida Blue. Truly a courageous player who, at one time, received daily death threats because of his unmitigated gall to challenge the status quo in sports.

This is an original, first edition, paperback published in 1972 by Pocket Books, a division of Simon & Schuster. This example is in better than average condition given its fifty three (53) years of age. There is crease on the lower front right cover. See close up photo. Otherwise, really no issues. Minor shelf wear is evident on spine and corner edges. Spine is strong. Consistent with time, the interior pages have toned / browned. All 208 pages fully intact. Clean.
