David C. Driskell: Artist and Scholar by Julie L. McGee is the first comprehensive biography and monograph devoted to the influential artist, educator, curator, and historian whose work helped establish African American art as a recognized field of scholarly study.

Driskell’s career united creative practice with teaching, collecting, curating, and historical research. His landmark 1976 exhibition, Two Centuries of Black American Art, brought the work of generations of Black artists into a major national museum context. In 2000, he received the National Humanities Medal, and the University of Maryland’s David C. Driskell Center was established in recognition of his work and legacy.

McGee traces Driskell’s development from his education at Howard University through his decades as an artist and scholar. Nearly 200 color reproductions and documentary photographs present his paintings, prints, collages, family history, friendships, and professional relationships within the broader development of twentieth-century American art.

This copy is signed in pen on the title page by both David C. Driskell and author Julie L. McGee. The dual signatures, first-edition status, and exceptional condition distinguish it from ordinary copies.

Near Fine condition, presenting as Like New. The cream cloth boards are immaculate, with sharp corners and crisp, straight edges. The binding is tight and secure, and the pages are exceptionally clean and appear unhandled. The vibrant illustrated dust jacket shows only slight surface rubbing to its printed panels and remains bright, complete, and exceptionally well preserved.
