Stunning antique early 19th century hand hammered brass jam pan or apple butter kettle. It features copper rivets and an iron handle. Unique utilitarian kitchenalia piece that tells a story of a simpler time.
This is an exceptional find. It measures 15" round which would have been used in a large country kitchen for cooking sizeable batches of jams. It has a rounded bottom which dates this style to the pre-industrial or early 1800s hearth kettles. It would have hung over a fire instead of sitting on a stove. The rounded bottom allowed the heat to conduct more evenly, preventing your jams from scorching.
At some point, likely in the late 1800s or early 1900s, someone welded a copper hook on the back which allows you to hang this on the wall, and it balances it better in order to sit on a counter.
Kettles like this are rare to find in such good condition and of this age and size. Usually, the bottoms are burned through or incredibly thin. This one cleaned up beautifully to reveal the loveliest, hammered brass and handmade copper rivets.
