A rare 1930 U.S. 1st Edition hardcover of Emil and the Detectives by Erich Kastner, first written in 1929 in German with the setting in Berlin. It was Kastner\'s first major success and the only one of his pre-1945 works to escape Nazi censorship.
This particular copy is unique in that it\'s a Doubleday Reinforced Library Edition. These editions were specially created to be extremely durable and long-lasting books by using stronger materials and sewing pages together, not just gluing them. They also feature reinforced spines, sturdy cloth/vinyl covers, and strong endpapers to prevent pages from falling out to ensure their longevity. Doubleday made this particular Reinforced Edition for the Monterey Library in California in 1930.
