More than 99% of global internet traffic travels across the ocean floor via fiber-optic submarine telecommunications cables—some of which stretch for thousands of kilometers. As of late 2025, the website TeleGeography listed 570 such cables in service and 81 under development. These cables are the modern-day successors to the early telegraph and, later, telephone lines laid on the ocean floor following the invention of Morse code in 1837.
